Last year, Eliza was lucky to spend her first birthday in Connecticut with a large part of the Freitas family, who were there celebrating her cousin Ryan’s college graduation. She really didn’t know what was going on though, aside from the fact that she had a lot of fun, and was given her first real cupcake.
This year was very different. Eliza knew something big was coming for weeks. She had been working on learning the “Happy Birthday” song, was excited about her special dress (thanks Aunt Miyoko!), and was curious about the trickle of gifts and cards arriving in the last few days. Her patience and enthusiasm was rewarded with beautiful weather, happy friends and family, and delicious cupcakes, made from scratch (frosting too!) by Momma Micaela.
We opened some presents in the morning at home with Grandma De-de, including her brand new micro-scooter, which she is already quite skilled at riding. We loaded up our “SUV” stroller, packed up the food, drinks, blankets, and treats, and slowly made our way over the ten blocks and three avenues to Prospect Park. It was quite a procession, especially with the dozen red and purple balloons, along with one large shiny Elmo balloon.
Blanca was there to greet us, and soon many other joined. We had a great showing, obviously drawn by the promise of a singalong led by “Big Pappa Nat”, the world famous childrens music recording star, who, as legend has it, once worked a shift at the food coop with Dane Zane! Eliza’s Aunt Becky and her cousins Sara and Noelle came all the way from New Jersey to deliver a magical guitar to Pappa Nat, so he could play the songs, to ensure Eliza’s big day expectations would be fulfilled.
It was a wonderful day, with great friends, in honor of our wonderful little Miss Blizzy. Thanks to all of you for the gifts, cards and love from afar.
Yay! Congrats mama and papa for making it two years! And congrats to Eliza who is getting bigger and brighter by the day!
Big hugs from Colorado,
